Letter Fun With F
One of my goals for 2008 is to give Giggly Girl her own school time. I would be fine with her just playing until next year, but she so wants to do school. I've always let her join in with whatever Superman was doing if she wanted, but I've not really created a time especially for her. So last week I blocked out some time in the mornings for her to do some letter of the week activities, and she loved it. Superman and Sweet Pea were welcome to join in of course, and for the most part they did.
I had toyed with the idea of having a letter of the week but never seemed to have time to get it going. Then I stumbled upon the Starry Sky Ranch and was inspired by their Fun School Fridays. I got a lot of last week's ideas from their Letter F week, but they are going in alphabetical order with their current letter being L, and I'm going to skip around a bit (trying to match up the letters with our FIAR books). This week we're doing "M" for Owl Moon, so I had to do some brainstorming and come up with my own ideas for "M". I'll list those at the end of the week.
But for now, here is our week with Letter F for The Story of Ferdinand.
-Looked at our HWT (Handwriting Without Tears) letter F card and traced it with our fingers
-Traced our felt letter F card
-Glued feathers onto an F template
-Listed as many F words as we could think of
-Ate goldfish for a snack
-Modeled letter F with playdough
-Used our HWT Stamp-n-See Screen to write F
-Read The Story of Ferdinand, colored the flag of Spain, and listened for F words (There are a lot of these in Ferdinand.)
-Read The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. I had the kids take off their socks, and then we had some fun with feet! They closed their eyes and I tickled their feet with a feather - they had to guess what it was. Then we counted all of our feet (and toes).
-Read another funny book: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish.
-Made (and ate) Fettucine from scratch in their cooking class with Chef Laurie
-Did a play with fingerpuppets
-Looked at the different state and country flags on our wall maps
-Felt of some different fabrics
-Played some file folder games (a big hit!)
-Story of Jesus Feeding the Five Thousand (or The Five Loaves and Two Fishes)
-Played Go Fish with our Jonah Cards
-Played a fun alphabet game with Foam Feet (see photo below)
If anyone has any ideas to add, feel free! I'm keeping a running list because I'll be doing this again with Sweet Pea in a couple of years!
Snow is really coming down here tonight - we're supposed to be hit hard! Stay warm and safe wherever you are tonight. :)
